Should he put pen to paper on a deal at Chelsea, he is likely to partner with fellow big money signing Fernandez in midfield.

The Argentine is entering his first full season with the Blues and has already made a great impression on Owen for the new campaign.

Taking to X during Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Jurgen Klopp’s side, the former Liverpool striker said: “Decent game this.

“Both teams had their moments. Enzo Fernandez is putting on an exhibition. If Caicedo joins him at Chelsea, that’ll be the best midfield pairing in the Premier League.”

Fernandez was named as Player of the Match at Stamford Bridge as he put in a performance worthy of his £106.8million price tag.

He appeared calm and composed in the midfield, with his positivity on the ball ensuring Chelsea looked strong going forward.

The World Cup winner was unable to provide any assists against the Reds but Blues fans will be undoubtedly pleased with his efforts.

Luis Diaz put the away side ahead after 18 minutes before Axel Disasi netted a debut goal as half-time approached.

Both sides threatened in the first half and had goals disallowed by VAR for marginal offsides.

A draw seemed to be a fair result given the chances in a match that showcased the quality that both teams have despite their respective shortcomings last season.

For Chelsea though, they will be encouraged by how well they played during most of Mauricio Pochettino’s first competitive game as boss.

Especially so with Fernandez as fans await a potentially world-class partnership with Caicedo.
