Chelsea travel to St Mary’s on Tuesday evening to face the Saints in the Premier League, which is a fixture they dominated in last year.

The Blues beat Southampton in both league games last season, as well as edging them out on penalties in the League Cup.

When selecting his starting XI this week for the trip to the South Coast, Chelsea manager Tuchel must start Mount.

Mason Mount against Southampton

In fairness, Mount’s start to the new 2022/23 season has been fairly low by his individual standards. He’s still trying to gel as part of a new-look front three next to Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz.

Tonight’s Southampton contest is exactly the kind of game to really get his campaign properly off and running, though.

The attacking midfielder’s got a great record of four goals and two assists in eight career appearances against the Saints, which included a brace in last season’s 6-0 away win at St Mary’s.

Also, he previously admitted that Southampton away is one of his fixtures in the entire division.

When asked what it’s like playing at St Mary’s, Mount responded: “I love it”.

If you’re unaware of the link, Mount was born in Portsmouth and supported Southampton’s greatest rivals as a kid.

The England international oddly seems to thrive off the hate he receives from the Southampton fanbase, so there’s no doubt he will be fired up going into tonight.

There’s certain patterns in football that managers can’t overlook, so Tuchel needs to throw form out the window and go with instinct tonight.

Described as “phenomenal” by Antonio Rudiger, Mount should keep his starting position tonight to try torment the Saints yet again.
