The Blues have suffered a poor start to the season, and midfield is a key area which Thomas Tuchel is looking to strengthen in before the deadline, with attack also an area needing work.

And, they have made their move following another disappointing loss to Southampton, letting Ajax know that they are willing to stump up £50m for the Mexican.

Alvarez has been at Ajax since 2019, and has made over 100 appearances for the Amsterdam outfit, while he has also racked up 55 National team appearances.

As per Dutch outlet Telegraaf, “after Alvarez was previously not allowed to go to Stade Rennes and Newcastle United, the midfielder now wants to leave. He wonders if an opportunity like this will ever come along. In the Premier League, he can earn four times the already generous salary at Ajax”.

Feyenoord Rotterdam v AFC Ajax Amsterdam – Dutch Eredivisie ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS – DECEMBER 19: Guus Til of Feyenoord Rotterdam, Edson Alvarez of AFC Ajax Amsterdam during the Dutch Eredivisie match between Feyenoord Rotterdam and AFC Ajax Amsterdam at Stadion Feijenoord De Kuip on December 19, 2021 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

“Alvarez demands that Ajax enter into talks with Chelsea”, the outlet claims.

However, they add, the Mexican will, in an ideal world not be allowed to leave, with Ajax having already lost much of their squad this summer. Ryan Gravenberch have both joined Bayern Munich, while Andre Onana left for Inter Milan.

Sebastien Haller joined Borussia Dortmund, and Nicolas Tagliafico left for Lyon.

Additionally, Manchester United have swooped for manager Erik ten Hag plus duo Antony and Lisandro Martinez. And, with the transfer deadline in the Netherlands a day earlier than the Premier League, should Alvarez depart there will be no chance to replace him.

However, £50m could well sway them, as they have already taken in record fees this summer.
