Unlike Thomas Tuchel, who usually used Sterling as a winger, Potter decided to play the 27-year-old at wing-back.

The former Manchester City star went on to score Chelsea’s only goal of the night. However, he admitted the new role requires a proper adapting period.

Speaking to BT Sport, the England international said: “I played in a slightly different role here under the manager and it was one that I enjoyed, playing out wide here, and over time it’ll get better.”

He added: “He wanted me out wide getting at the full-back, getting in the box, creating chances. Like I said, the more time under him, I think it’ll get better for us.”

Having lost their opening UCL match against Dynamo Zagreb, Chelsea looked to bounce back by beating Salzburg.

However, the Austrian side managed to score a late equalizer to nullify Sterling’s goal.
