Barcelona has been in hot pursuit of the France international but has been slowed down by the high transfer fee being demanded by Sevilla, which will require them to raise more funds through sales of some of their players before they could table an effective bid.

However, Chelsea has overtaken them in negotiations for Kounde, having agreed to shell out £55m, being the transfer fee placed on their target by his present club who are now resigned to losing him this summer.

After losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen already this summer to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, Thomas Tuchel is under compulsion to rebuild his defense, which he has already started by signing Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli and is looking to add two more defenders.

Kounde has long been on the Radar of Chelsea, who tried to sign him last season but were unable to agree on terms with Sevilla.

Chelsea needs Kounde as a replacement for their captain, Cesar Azpilicueta who is Barcelona bound and would need to complete the signing of the latter before letting him go.
