Todd Boehly’s Premier League all-star suggestion

Good morning and welcome to the football.london live Chelsea blog for Saturday, September 17.

The Blues were set to welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge this weekend but the fixture has been postponed and rescheduled in light of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday. So, Graham Potter has a few extra days on the training pitch as the west Londoners look to return to winnings ways.

On Thursday, Conor Gallagher was omitted from England’s 28-man squad as Gareth Southgate prepares for the latest instalment of Nations League matches. With the midfielder dropped, it casts doubt over his future at Chelsea – though there’s not much he can do but knuckle down with the Qatar World Cup commencing in November.

On Friday, Luis Campos ruled himself out of the running for sporting director in west London. The Portuguese transfer guru committed his future to Paris Saint-Germain, with RB Salzburg chief Christoph Freund and former Liverpool director Michael Edwards both still heavily linked.

Lampard intentions clear after Gordon bid

Chelsea have been handed a major blow in the race to sign Everton star Anthony Gordon following Frank Lampard’s latest admission. The 21-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer as Thomas Tuchel looked to bolster his frontline.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo, Chelsea’s all-time top goalscorer admitted that Everton are now in talks with Gordon over a new contract, which comes as a major blow to the west Londoners. The England youth international’s contract is set to expire in 2025 after penning an extension in September 2020.

“The club are speaking with Anthony and Anthony’s people to see if we can get the right solution,” Lampard said. While this, as aforementioned, comes as a huge setback for Boehly, the west Londoners are now under new management.

According to The Times, the American billionaire has held talks with Campos regarding the Blues’ sporting director vacancy. The 58-year-old is currently working as an advisor for both PSG and Celta Vigo on a freelance contract.

The report states that there is a clause in Campos’ deal with the Parisians which prevents him from working ‘in parallel’ with another ‘big club’. And, in order in order for him to exclusively work with Chelsea, he must pay buyout the remainder of his contract at PSG.

However, a one-way ticket on the Eurostar to London St Pancras railway station now looks to be off the cards with Campos ruling out a move away from Paris. Speaking to RMC Sport, he committed his future to Les Parc des Princes.

“I have a three-year deal here at PSG, as I wanted, and I’ve joined this club because I’m convinced we can do something extraordinary,” Campos said. “I’ve the right energy to fight for PSG and do something great here.”

Boehly shortlists fifth candidate as search for Chelsea transfer chief continues

A fifth candidate for the sporting director role at Chelsea has emerged as Todd Boehly looks to bolster the Blues backroom staff. The American billionaire is in the market for a specialist to join the west Londoners’ scouting team, with Paris Saint-Germain advisor Luis Campos, RB Salzburg chief Christoph Freund and former Liverpool director Michael Edwards already heavily linked with moves to Stamford Bridge.

According to The Athletic, Bayer Leverkusen boss Tim Steidten has come under consideration for the sporting director role. Prior to taking the head coach role at the Bundesliga outfit this summer, the 43-year-old was head of scouting at the BayArena.

Previously, Steidten enjoyed spells as a scout, director of football, head of scouting and executive assistant at Werder Bremen, where he is said to overachieved in each position. At Leverkusen, he was responsible for the signings of bright prospects Moussa Diaby, Patrik Schick, Amine Adli, Adam Hlozek and, more recently, Callum Hudson-Odoi.
