At a time when Chelsea are in sixth place following their weekend win over Leicester City, Southampton can move ahead of their next opponents if they win at St Mary’s.
Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel was forced to sit in the stands due to a one-game touchline ban, giving him a unique perspective when assessing his players at the weekend.
Conor Gallagher’s unnecessary dismissal would have enraged him, but the response with 10 men would have provided reassurance about the character of a squad in transition.
More new faces will be arriving at Chelsea in the coming days, most likely beginning with Wesley Fofana from Leicester now that a fee has allegedly been verbally agreed upon.
