Immediately contact 911 if you have been bitten by a poisonous snake, particularly if the afflicted region changes color, erupts in swelling, or becomes unbearably painful. Antivenom medication is available in many emergency rooms and can be of assistance to you.
While you are waiting for medical assistance, try to complete the following tasks if at all possible:
Move away from the distance between the snake’s placement and you.
Keep your voice low and your body temperature low to assist slow the spread of venom.
Remove all of your jewelry and wrap yourself tightly in a blanket before you begin to swell.
Try to arrange yourself such that the bite occurs at or below the level of your heart, if at all feasible.
When cleaning a wound, only soap and water should be used. Dress it with a dry, clean dressing to keep it from becoming dirty.
The Wrong Thing to Do if You or Someone You Love is Bitten by a Snake
It is not a good idea to pick up the snake or try to capture it (this may put you or someone else at risk for a bite).
Use a tourniquet only when absolutely necessary.
Never cut yourself with a knife after a wound has healed.
It is not a good idea to consume poison.
It is not suggested to apply cold to the wound or to immerse it in water to heal it.
Alcohol should not be used as a pain reliever.
Caffeinated drinks are not permitted to be ingested.
Symptoms
The majority of snake bites occur on the arms, legs, and hands. Symptoms of a toxic snake bite include pain, scraping, and bleeding at the site of the bite.
After being bitten by a venomous snake, the victim will typically experience acute scorching pain for fifteen to thirty minutes at the bite site. In addition to causing swelling and bruising near the cut, it can also cause swelling and bruising up the arm or leg. Another set of signs and symptoms includes nausea, shortness of breath, a general feeling of weakness, and a peculiar way of speaking.
Toxins found in some snakes, such as coral snakes, can cause neurologic symptoms such as tingling on the skin, difficulty speaking, and weakness in the affected person.
At times, a venomous snake may bite without injecting venom into the victim’s body. The effect of these “dry bites” is irritation at the site of the injection.
