Chelsea also set the record for most money spent by a Premier League club in a single transfer window after adding Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Carney Chukwuemeka and Denis Zakaria to their squad.
Yeah, the numbers are pretty wild and it’s why some believe we could be on the verge of an era of dominance from English clubs in European competition.
The best players are going to continue to flock to the Premier League in search of lucrative contracts, whether the rest of the continent’s elite like it or not.
With that in mind, Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has chosen to call out those more concerned with chasing riches rather than success in the sport.
The Germany international has argued that even with enormous amounts of TV money coming their way, English teams have still struggled in the Champions League – which is certainly correct to some degree.
Last season, Kroos’ Real Madrid triumphed in the competition, beating Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool along the way.

“TV money has been significantly higher in England for years and yet it hasn’t resulted in English teams winning everything,” Kroos said on the the OMR podcast, per Goal.
“Thank God not all players look only at salary but also at winning many titles and to grow more.”
Is that Kroos aiming a thinly-veiled dig at former teammate Casemiro? It could well be…
The Brazilian – who won five Champions Leagues alongside Kroos at Real Madrid – chose to join Manchester United in a £70 million deal this summer after being offered a salary in the region of £300,000-a-week.
Casemiro will have to make do with Europa League football this season, though, due to the Red Devils’ failures in 2021/22.
As for Kroos and Real Madrid, they’ll be chasing Champions League glory once again and they commence their campaign in the competition with a match away at Celtic on Tuesday evening.
With Antonio Rudiger and Aurelien Tchouameni added to the star-studded squad over the summer, stopping Carlo Ancelotti’s side will be anything but easy.
