Mail Sport can reveal the Newcastle winger is still feeling the effects of the ankle issue that kept him out of the final day of the season – the first time he had missed a match because of injury all year – and he has sat out of full training in recent days.

That is thought to be a precautionary move with England’s opening game of the tournament still two weeks away.

However, it is likely to keep him out of Monday’s game at his home ground.

Gordon is expected to train this week in the build-up to Friday’s send-off friendly against Iceland at Wembley, after which Gareth Southgate will name his 26-man squad for Germany.

Providing there are no lingering doubts over fitness, the 23-year-old is almost certain to be included.

The former Everton star appeared in 48 of Newcastle’s 51 matches last term – he missed two because of suspension – and was their player of the season, scoring 12 goals and laying on 11 across all competitions.
