According to initial reports, the bus overturned near Igoju Teachers Training College, in Imenti within Meru County.

Several people were injured during the accident. No fatalities were reported. At the time of the accident, the matatu belonging to the Menya Sacco was carrying passengers to Meru from Mombasa.

Local residents in Imenti quickly rushed to the scene to help the injured passengers. The injured passengers were quickly rushed to the hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.

This happened a day after another bus was involved in an accident at Nithi Bridge in Tharaka Nithi, claiming the lives of 4 passengers.

The accident happened at a time when the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) is conducting a nationwide crackdown to address the recent surge in road accidents.

Speaking in Narok County on Sunday, April 7, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed that traffic police unit was acutely understaffed hence the need for NTSA officers to help in maintaining road safety.

Murkomen assured Kenyans that measures would continue being put in place to ensure road accidents reduce.

Some of the measures include; real-time monitoring of school buses as well as instantaneous fines for reckless driving.
