This would be the second ambassador of Akwa Ibom origin currently serving under Buhari’s second term administration.
According to a letter of Commission personally endorsed by Mr President, Muhammadu Buhari, the service required of Chief Okon Abia Akadu is total commitment.
Chief Akadu is a senior citizen who, about a decade past, retired from Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs with an undaunted record.
Okon Abia Akadu, Okete-Okete Òrò, is one of the retired diplomats appointed to represent Nigeria in events of necessity.
The Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb Zubairu Dada presented the Letter of Commission to Amb. Akadu and others, on behalf of Mr President, who was in France for a Summit.
Flanked by Amb Jane Olisa, acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, the Minister praised the invaluable service records of the appointees and assured them of the president’s confidence in their pedigrees.
The Letter of Commission reads thus in parts: “Whereas it appears to me expedient to nominate some persons of approved wisdom, loyalty, diligence and circumspection to represent me in the character of Ambassador, with the special object of representing the interests of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Now know ye that I, reposing special trust and confidence in the discretion and faithfulness of my trusty and well-beloved Okon Abia Akadu, have nominated, constituted and appointed as I do by these presents nominates, constitute and appoint him, This Said Okon Abia Akadu to be My Ambassador for the purpose aforesaid.
“Giving and granting to him, in that character all power an authority to do and perform all proper acts, matters, and things which may be desirable or necessary for the promotion of relations of friendship, good understanding, and harmonious intercourse for the Federal Republic of Nigeria and for the protection and furtherance of the interests confided to his care; by the diligent and discreet accomplishment of which acts, matters and things aforementioned, he shall gain my approval and show himself worthy of my high confidence.
“And I therefore request all those whom it may concern to receive and acknowledge Okon Abia Akadu as Ambassador as aforesaid and freely to communicate upon all matters which may appertain to the objects of the High Mission thereto he is hereby appointed.
“Given at the State House, Abuja, Under my Hand and Seal This 5th Day of September Two Thousand and Twenty-One”, the letter concluded.
Reacting to the development, Amb Akadu reasoned that the appointment was a great honour on him and on all those who believe in professional excellence.
He assured Nigerians that as God had guided him to invest 35 years into public service without a dent on his record, he would justify the confidence reposed in him by showing true diligence and required expertise in the discharge of his duties.
