Fourteen other members of the opposition party, including two members of parliament, marched in Kampala to protest this arrest. They were detained “for participating in illegal assembly activities,” said police spokesperson Patrick Onyango.

They were later charged with “public nuisance” but all pleaded not guilty. Four of the accused were released on bail, while the others were remanded and will appear in court again on August 7.

Ugandan police previously accused 100 participants in anti-government protests of violating public order. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni called on the protesters to disclose the foreign sources of their funding. According to him, the protests organized on July 23 were financed from abroad.

Protests against corruption and human rights violations took place in the Ugandan capital on July 23. Police had earlier sealed off the premises of Uganda’s largest opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), and three of its members of parliament were remanded.
