Babs Omidina has been on his sick bed for a long period of time before breathing his last. However, many people are of the opinion that his ailment began after he was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA and his subsequent detention. It must not be forgotten that the late Actor was in court for a long period of time over this issue which many people also believed had contributed to his health issue.
THE GENESIS
The news brokeout On October 10, 2011 that the NDLEA had arrested Babatunde Omidina at the Murital Muhammed international airport over the allegation of drug trafficking. The agency reported that scanners at the airport detected that ” Baba Suwe ” had swallowed the substances while trying to board a plane to Paris in France.
Upon his arrest by the agency, all the needful were done to make sure that he excreted the substances but he did not. This could not afford the agency to have a concrete evidence on the allegation that Babatunde Omidina actually trafficked the drugs.
The Agency finally released him from their Costudy in November 2011 after he was detained over the allegation of ingesting the substances after he was held for three weeks without excreting any substances.
Upon his release from their Costudy, his fans welcomed him back with pomp and pageantry as he was granted bail to the tune of over $3,000 dollars.
Bamidele Aturu who was the late lawyer of the deceased told the court that series of test were conduct by NDLEA to establish his client ingested the substances, but nothing was found.
On the long-run, the Lagos State High Court ordered that the Agency should pay the sum of Twenty five million Naira N25,000,000 to Babatunde Omidina as compensation. Justice Yetunde Idowu ordered that the money should be paid within 24 days of delivering the judgment.
His Lawyer actually asked for a compensation of N100,000,000 Naira before Justice Idowu ordered that NDLEA should pay Twenty five million Naira, N25,000,000.
While delivering her Judgement, Justice Idowu explained that the agency did not have enough evidence to substantiate that the late actor actually ingested the substances, but until his death on Monday 22nd of November, 2021,the late comic Actor did not receive any amount from the agency.
Unfortunately, the lawyer representing the late Actor, Bamidele Aturu, died in the pursuit of his client’s compensation as there was nobody to help the Actor from getting back his compensation from the Agency.
Throughout these period, Omidina had fallen sick while going to the hospital for a medical attention on a regular basis. Time was, when some spirited individuals solicited that people should donate towards the health care of the late Actor as family, friends and professional collegues did actually donated to the cause.
The late Actor also embarked on a foreign medical trip in the cause of his treatment but all to no avail till he breathe his last, after ten years of surviving the NDLEA drug allegations.
What many people now says is that Babatunde Omidina could still be alive hail and hearty, if only the compensation was paid which could have enabled him to take care of his medical bills.
