Troost-Ekong, honored as the Player of the Tournament in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), mentioned that Alex Iwobi and Leon Balogun provided advice and encouragement, dissuading him from retiring from international football before the Ivory Coast tournament.

Included unexpectedly in the final squad for the tournament, the 30-year-old hadn’t featured for the Super Eagles in over a year.

In a recent conversation with CNN World Sport’s Amanda Davies, the PAOK star shared that his talks with Iwobi and Balogun led him to reminisce about his initial days with the Super Eagles and the sense of pride he experienced during his debut under the late Stephen Keshi.

“I spoke with some of the players I have been with [in the national team] for a long time. For example Alex Iwobi, Leon Balogun,” the former Watford star said.
