According to a police report seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the police constable had joined other people at a club in the area to watch a football match.

At the time of the incident, there was an English Premier League (EPL) game between Manchester United and Chelsea, which had attracted major crowds as the two clubs have a wide range of supporters.

Amos Kipchirchir, attached to the Liter Police post was shot several times on the left side of his chest at around 11:15 pm when he bled and died before receiving medical help.

Local police recovered five used cartridges of 7.62x39mm at the crime scene, which has since been closed pending further investigations.

The body of the deceased was transferred to the Tot Sub-County Hospital for autopsy, as the officers launched a manhunt for the culprits.

The reason for the attack is yet to be established, as the officer had no known enemies. The investigations are trying to establish whether it was a case of the wrong place at the wrong time, or whether the constable was the target all along.

In a closely similar incident, another police constable died on March 29 after shooting himself in the head inside his house in Laikipia County.

Officers retrieved his body from the scene, where he lay lifeless in a pool of blood with the gun used at his side. He allegedly shot himself in the chin with the bullet coming out through his left ear.

Cases of officers getting killed have been on the rise in the recent past. On March 30, a police officer in the Mbooni area in Makueni County surrendered himself to his seniors after shooting dead his collogue after duty.
