Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino says he expects Romelu Lukaku to report for pre-season training next week. Pochettino was speaking on Wednesday for the first time since beginning his role in west London on July 1.

Though Chelsea have managed to trim their large squad with several departures already this transfer window, there remains a question mark over the future of Lukaku, who spent last season back on loan at Inter Milan.

Xhaka explains Arsenal exit

Granit Xhaka has explained his decision to leave Arsenal. The midfielder has joined Bayer Leverkusen in a £21.5m deal. But he has denied speculation that his wife was the deciding factor in his decision to depart North London.

He said: “There was speculation everywhere that my wife was no longer happy in England. That is not at all true. The fact is that as a person I am always interested in new challenges. After seven years, the time has come for something completely new.

Bola leaves Boro

Middlesbrough have confirmed the sale of Marc Bola to Turkish Super Lig side Samsunspor for an undisclosed fee. Left-back Bola, 25, joined Boro from Blackpool in 2019 and made over 100 appearances during his time on Teesside. Michael Carrick’s men have signed six new players within the last week.

Liverpool ‘convinced’ in Lavia chase
