For at least one evening, Robert Lewandowski’s two goals against the bottom-placed team in the league helped Barca overtake Real Madrid in the rankings by one point. On Sunday, Real will face off against Atletico Madrid.
The 34th minute saw Lewandowski give the Blaugrana the advantage they deserved.
The Poland international scored his tenth goal of the season in all competitions by tapping in Alejandro Balde’s low driven pass
Four minutes before the break, the Catalan Giants increased their lead with Memphis Depay evading John Chetauya’s challenge inside the box before smashing in.
Soon after the halftime, Lewandowski scored his second goal and Barcelona’s third. A low cross from Ousmane Dembele was improperly cleared at the near post in the 48th minute. The ball found it way to Depay, who passed it to Lewandowski to score.
Elche’s outcome, however, means that they are still at the bottom of the standings with only one point following a game in which both their manager and captain were dismissed.
