Governors under the platform of the party agreed that the national convention should be held in February 2022 during a meeting in Abuja on Sunday, November 21, 2021.
The ruling party has been postponing its national convention since 2020 after Adams Oshiomhole was sacked as the party’s national chairman.
A new national chairman and other members of the party’s executive council will be elected at the convention next year.
How Will the Convention Determine the Party’s Candidate for the 2023 Election?
The ruling party is yet to zone its presidential ticket for the 2023 general election. Prominent people from different regions have started showing interest in the position.
The region of the next national chairman will determine whether the presidential ticket will be zoned in 2023.
Over the years, the party has always alternated the chairmanship position and presidential candidate between the north and the south.
When Muhammadu Buhari from the Northern region was the party’s candidate in 2015, John Oyegun from the Southern region was the national chairman.
In 2019, Oshiomhole from the South was the chairman, while Buhari from the North was the presidential candidate.
Many political parties always follow this pattern to ensure that they have a national outlook and not a regional one.
It will not be fine for the national chairman and the presidential candidate to come from the same region.
At the same time, southern politicians who are interested in running for the presidential seat under APC must work for the emergence of a northerner as national chairman at the upcoming convention.
If a northerner emerges as national chairman, there is a high possibility that the presidential ticket will be zoned to the south and vice versa.
