3. Maintaining a healthy diet

4. Maintaining normal weight

5. Drinking enough water

6 Reducing salt intake

7 Limiting alcohol

8. Abstaining from smoking

9 Avoiding self-medication to prevent kidney failure.

He also appealed to the governments at all levels to employ more medical personnel into various health centres in the local, state and federal health care facilities to cater for the health needs of the teeming Nigerian population.

Dr Odunola gave this advice while featuring as a guest on a special edition of ‘Ko tan sibe’, a current affairs programme on UNILORIN 89.3 FM recently.

The medical expert, who identified the kidney as one of the most important organs in the human body, said that the organ is responsible for removing excess and toxins water from the blood in form of urine, controlling blood pressure, producing red blood cells, carefully controlling the salt and water in the body, and keeping bones healthy, among others.

Speaking on the symptoms of kidney disease, the Director of the Unilorin Health Services advised the public to immediately report to accredited hospitals when they observe symptoms such as having trouble sleeping, feeling the need to urinate more often or their urine is foamy, having trouble concentrating or feeling more tired unnecessarily.

Dr. Odunola, who is also a Member of the University Council, however, appealed to the government at all levels to subsidize the treatment of kidney disease so that poor people who are battling with it can also get treatment.

While observing that most people who died of kidney failure could have gotten the right treatment, the renowned medical practitioner lamented that the cost of treating the disease prevent most people from complaining to physicians.

He also appealed to the government to procure more kidney dialysis machines for public hospitals and train health officials on how to use them, saying that this will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of the poor masses.
