Unlike coffee, herbal tea does not contain caffeine, instead, it has a natural way of energising our morning and battling against bad health, especially in our 60s and above. This is because they contain important varieties of nutrients and phytochemicals that can stimulate physical wellness, good emotional health and boost immunity against chronic health diseases.
1. Peppermint tea
Studies show that the peppermint oil in peppermint tea can help to relieve morning headaches, migraines, digestive tract, and freshen your breath. Peppermint oil, aromatherapy, can also improve concentration, alertness and energy. Its antibacterial effects have also been shown to kill bacterial.
2. Sage tea
Scientific research has supported the evidence that sage tea is beneficial for cognitive function and potentially effective against Alzheimer’s disease, which is beneficial in our 60s. Other studies also show that sage tea can increase blood lipid levels and protect against the development of colon and heart disease. This is because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds such as carnosol, rosmarinic acid, and camphor.
3. Ginger tea
Ginger contains gingerols, phenol compounds that have proven to be effective alternatives to anti-nausea drugs in people undergoing chemotherapy who can’t tolerate the standard drugs. Further research also shows that ginger can protect against heart diseases by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, preventing blood clots and heart attacks, and improving circulation. It can also relieve osteoarthritis of the knee and improve blood sugar levels.
4. Licorice tea
According to Healthline, licorice tea contains antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects that can prevent certain types of cancer, ease upper respiratory conditions, protect against cavities, improve blood sugar levels and kidney health. It can also boost antispasmodic effects, which may help with gas and bloating.
5. Lemon balm tea
Studies show that lemon balm tea can improve arteries elasticity, a risk factor for stroke, heart disease, and mental decline. It can also increase the body’s natural antioxidant enzymes that protect the body from oxidative damage to DNA and cells.
6. Rooibos tea
Studies show that rooibos tea can improve bone health and reduce the risk of heart disease by stimulating the cells involved in bone growth and density and lowering blood levels of bad cholesterol and fat. It can also restore the function of aged cells and protect cells from oxidative stress, which makes it a good anti-ageing proponent.
