A healthy relationship is made up of reciprocal love and commitment from both partners, because we all need something from a relationship. You might be in a romantic relationship and think that you are in love, whereas you are only forcing yourself on your partner. Here are the ways to know:

1. A relationship where you are constantly the giver without receiving anything for your effort shows that you are only forcing yourself on your partner. This can make you feel drained after dating each other for some time. Your partner should be adding value to your life.

No matter how much you think you love someone, that love should never make you blind to reality. Someone who truly values you will put the same effort into the relationship as you put into it to make it work. You can never be the only one fighting to save your relationship.

2. If it gets to a point where you feel that you are losing yourself while attempting to please your partner, it means you are forcing yourself on them. They usually don’t have a reasonable excuse for avoiding you. You didn’t offend them, nor have you made any mistakes to warrant this.

3. They just feel like their status is bigger than yours or that they deserve someone better. They treat you like an option while you can hardly go a day without reaching out to them. They claim to be busy even when you know that they are not.

Sometimes you send them a lot of messages, and it takes a while before you get a response from them. They make you feel like you have to apply some effort before you can gain their attention. They treat you this way because it boosts their ego when you make them feel special.

4. You are always available to them, but they intentionally become scarce when you need them. They give you flimsy excuses for not showing up whenever you fix a date, and they rarely apologize for hurting you. The first person to always apologize after any quarrel is you.

5. If you are in a relationship where you constantly have to ask yourself if you are good enough for your partner, you are forcing yourself on them, and it’s time to realize your self-worth. You don’t need validation from someone who treats you like a nobody.

The more you seek validation, the more you keep forcing yourself on them. The only way to realize your self-worth is to disconnect yourself from this kind of relationship. You have to put yourself in a position where they will realize they’ve lost someone precious.

Make a decision that you can’t force your partner to give you the regard you deserve. If they refuse to do it naturally, it means that they don’t deserve you. If they owe you love and commitment and they are not giving it, let them go. Never put such a relationship above your dignity and peace of mind.
