Bitter cola has been used in traditional African medicine for centuries and has many beneficial properties, including helping to fight bacterial and viral infections.

2. Bitter Kola may be a cure for osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis whose symptoms can range from uncomfortable to debilitating. It is characterised by degeneration of the articular cartilage and underlying bone, causing pain and stiffness, particularly in the hip, knee and thumb joints. Osteoarthritis can be caused by trauma to the joints, obesity, ageing and genetic factors.

Researchers at Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria tested bitter cola on osteoarthritis symptoms and found that bitter cola can significantly reduce the inflammation and pain associated with the disease. The plant also increases joint mobility in patients.

A study published in the Science Journal of Microbiology found that bitter cola seeds and leaves have antibacterial properties.

When bitter kola was tested with Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli, the plant was able to inhibit these micro-organisms.

The antimicrobial activity was attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds such as tannins and saponins in the extract.
