While a nutrient-dense, well-rounded diet helps your immune system, a diet high in ultra-processed foods depletes nutrients and impairs immune function.

This article contains a list of ten foods that may weaken your immune system.

1. Added sugar

No doubt limiting your intake of added sugar benefits your overall health and immune function. Foods that raise blood sugar significantly increase the production of inflammatory proteins such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-), C-reactive protein (CRP), and interleukin-6 (IL-6).

This is especially true for diabetics, who can have elevated blood sugar levels for longer periods than people with well-regulated blood sugar levels. Diets high in added sugar may make people more susceptible to autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

2. Salty foods

Salty foods, such as chips, frozen dinners, and fast food, may impair your immune system’s response. Diets high in salt may cause tissue inflammation and increase the risk of autoimmune diseases.

Excessive salt consumption has been shown to aggravate pre-existing autoimmune diseases such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus. Finally, they consumed 12 grams per day for the next 30 days.

3. Fried foods

Fried foods are high in a molecule class known as advanced glycation end products (AGEs). When sugars react with proteins or fats at high temperatures, such as when frying, AGEs form. When levels in your body become too high, they can contribute to inflammation and cellular damage.

Limiting your intake of fried foods such as french fries, potato chips, pan-fried steak, fried bacon, and fish will help you lose weight. Fried foods weaken the immune system and make people more susceptible to diseases such as malaria and certain cancers.

4. Meats that have been processed and charred

Processed and charred meats, like fried foods, are high in AGE. Saturated fat is also abundant in processed meats. Consumption of processed meats and charred meat has been linked to a variety of diseases, including colon cancer.

The highest AGE contents were found in fried bacon, broiled hot dogs, roasted chicken thighs, and grilled steak, according to a study that examined the AGE content of 549 foods.

5. Foods containing certain additives

Many foods, particularly ultra-processed foods, contain additives to improve shelf-life, texture, and flavor. Some of these may harm your immune response. Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and polysorbate-80 (P80) are two common emulsifiers linked to immune dysfunction.
