Where I grew up in Nigeria people eat all sorts of foods and sometimes claim most common foods are nutritious when they are consumed in a certain unusual way. One of such example is egg. They consume or eat it raw combined with milk and claim they can help improve blood production in the body.

While this is not scientifically or medically proven it can expose you to food poisoning because raw foods are rich environments for bacteria, fungi and other pathogenic microorganisms to thrive or grow. For the purpose of clarity, below are the three foods you should stay away from to prevent food poisoning or infection.

1. Raw Egg. I’ve already explained the rationale for not eating eggs raw because they can be a source of microorganisms that can cause poisoning.

2. Unpasteurized milk. Pasteurization is one way of disinfecting or expelling microorganisms from foods like milk. When you consume milk that is not pasteurized you’re exposing yourself to food positioning or infection.

3. Undercooked Poultry or meats. Just like I explained in the previous examples, undercooked poultry such as chicken and turkey can be sources of bacteria which can cause food poisoning when you consume them. To prevent this, always ensure your meats are properly cooked before you serve them for consumption.

4. Undercooked Rice. Back in my school days, students cook their rice straight without first parboiling it. Sometimes when they are in a hurry, they don’t wait for it to get cooked thoroughly before eating it. This is one way you can actually get food poisoning if you eat or consume undercooked rice.

5. Unwashed fruits. What most people do is that they just get fruits from roadsides or pluck them directly from trees and consume them without washing them. This is a risky thing to do because they can actually expose themselves to food positioning by eating unwashed fruits.
