But did you know there’s a long list of things that could actually be making our periods worse? We spoke to doctors, gynaecologists and personal trainers about what to avoid when you’re on your period. Here is 4 specific things to avoid.

Avoid Caffeinated Drinks

We all love our hot cup of coffee or tea in the morning. Some of us even cannot wake up without consuming a cup of coffee or other caffeinated drinks like energy drinks. But, you should try and avoid this habit during your periods. Refrain from that cup of caffeine and instead keep hydrating yourself to the max.

Avoid Wearing a Pad or Tampons for More Than 3-4 Hours

It’s easy to get caught up in your everyday activities, but don’t leave the same pad or tampon in all day. “You should be changing your tampon/pad every 3 to 4 hours to avoid an unpleasant odor, bacterial buildup which can lead to infections, as well as the dreaded bleeding through your pants.

Intercourse Without Condoms

Ideally one should avoid intercourse during periods, however some women can indulge in sexual activity when the bleeding is relatively less i.e on the fourth day of the cycle. The use of condoms will be more comfortable for both partners and will prevent chances of v*ginal and urinary infections.

Smoking

We all know by now that smoking is bad for you, but in addition to its health risks, it can also make your period much worse. A study from the journal Tobacco Control found that smokers are more likely to have painful periods than non-smokers.
