All dog bite wounds, even minor ones, should be monitored for signs of infection until they’re completely healed. The type of first aid you administer will be determined by the severity of the bite. In this article, we shall be looking at some first aid treatment to give a victim of dog bite.
1. Wash the wound.
In the event of a dog bite, wash the wound with soap, or detergent and lots of water for at least 15 minutes, disinfect the wound with alcohol or povidone-iodine and then seek medical help. Vaccination should be initiated and if the suspect dog is alive after 10 days, the vaccination series can be stopped.
2. Slow the bleeding by putting a clean cloth on it.
First apply pressure with a bandage or clean cloth to stop the bleeding, if the bite is already bleeding, apply a clean cloth to the wound and gently press down to stop the flow.
3. Apply antibiotic cream.
Apply antibiotic ointment, and cover it with sterile gauze or a clean cloth. Call your doctor if the bite or scratch broke or punctured the skin, even if the area is small. A child who is bitten by an animal may need antibiotics, a tetanus booster, or rarely, a series of rabies shots.
4. Sterilize the wound.
Use hydrogen peroxide, chlorhexidene or betadine to dab the wound in order to help kill germs and to sterilize it. Note that the continued use of hydrogen peroxide on the wound is not recommended as it can interfere with the healing process.
