Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen finished 8th in the 2023 Ballon D’or rankings after a spectacular season with Napoli. In coming years, the player will definitely be a contender for the award but he might not win it unless he does some things. Here are three things Victor Osimhen should do that might finally give him a Ballon D’or award.
1.Join a bigger club:
Napoli is a definitely a big club and one of the biggest in Italy but at Napoli, the chances of the player winning a Ballon D’or title is definitely slim.
Joining a bigger club such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich will definitely give him a boost in the Ballon D’or. These clubs are big teams and have a large fan base who can also greatly influence the award.
2.Win the UEFA Champions League:
In recent years, the Ballon D’or winners have won the award because they won the UEFA Champions League. Though this is not true on every occasion, winning the competition increases the chances of winning the Ballon D’or.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have won the Ballon D’or on several occasions because they won the UCL. Luka Modric and Karim Benzema also won the Ballon D’or when they won the UCL and this proves that winning the competition has a large influence on winning the Ballon D’or.
Osimhen finished 8th in 2023 Ballon D’or ranking because he won the Serie A and scored a lot of goals and if he had won the UCL, he would have definitely finished higher.
3.Score a lot of goals:
Despite scoring a lot of goals last season, Osimhen could only finish 8th. Goals are a huge part of winning the Ballon D’or especially if it’s a striker that is being considered. Osimhen scored 31 goals for Napoli last season but it isn’t enough nowadays to win the prestigious award.
Karim Benzema scored 44 goals in 2021/22 season to win the award, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi also had to score a ton of goals to win the award.
Erling Haaland finished second in the Ballon D’or ranking this year with 52 goals and might have won the award if Messi had not won the World Cup.
This shows that despite 31 goals being a great achievement for Victor Osimhen, he needs to score at least 40+ goals to be considered a favourite to win the award because he is a striker and scoring goals is his main task.
