Despite Tyrell Malacia’s strong challenge and Shaw’s challenging start to the season, manager Gareth Southgate has continued to start the left-back.

Club captain Harry Maguire has also been selected, along with Shaw. Maguire’s inclusion comes as no surprise given that he has been a stalwart for the Three Lions for the previous five years.

Dean Henderson was chosen from a group of three goalkeepers in addition to the pair. The United graduate who is at Nottingham Forest on loan has been rewarded for his excellent performance.

Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were unfortunate to be left out.

While Shaw, Maguire, and Henderson are welcome additions to the team, Rashford and Sancho’s exclusion is definitely a surprise.

The pair have not played for the Three Lions since last year, but their outstanding performance in recent weeks likely justified recalls to the national team this month.

Rashford earned a comeback after scoring three goals and dishing out two assists this season. His muscular ailment might have had some bearing on why he was excluded.

The Red Devils graduate still has a chance to make the final 26-man World Cup roster, but much will depend on how well he performs between now and the competition.

To convince Southgate to select Rashford and Sancho for the important showpiece in Qatar, they will both need to play a significant role in United’s victories over the next two months.
