Teams like Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid and several others have all lost European Cup/UEFA Champions League finals. But fortunately, they have all been compensated by winning the tournament on several occasions.
On the other hand, some clubs have played in the final more than once but have never been fortunate enough to lift the trophy. Such clubs are three in number and they are:
1. Reims lost 4-3 to Real Madrid in the 1955-56 final and also lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the 1958-59 final.
2. Valencia lost 3-0 to Real Madrid in the 1999-2000 final and lost 5-4 on penalties to Bayern Munich in the 2000-01 final.
3. Atletico Madrid lost 4-0 in the replay against Bayern Munich in the 1973-74 final, lost 4-1 in extra time to Real Madrid in the 2013-14 final and also lost 5-3 on penalties to Real Madrid in the 2015-16 final.
