While the National Mashujaa Day celebrations went down in Kwale County, citizens took to social media to remember fallen nationals, the majority of whom were gunned down by police officers amid anti-government protests.

Human rights activists also planned to hold parallel Mashujaa Day celebrations at Uhuru Park in remembrance of those who lost their lives.

However, heavy police presence was witnessed at Uhuru Park where Kenyans were barred from accessing the ground, leading to few arrests.

Among those remembered on Mashujaa Day were Rex Masai, who was shot dead at the onset of Gen Z protests, largely organised only and partaken by Kenyan youth.

Rex’s death attracted the wrath of Kenyans, especially protesters, condemning the government for killing an unarmed protester.

Others who died during the protests and whom Kenyans have remembered on Mashujaa Day are Denzel Omondi whose body was found in a quarry, Franklin Otieno and John Njuguna Ndung’u.

According to human rights groups, 61 people were killed during the Gen Z protests, and many other disappeared.

Erickson Kyalo Mutisya was brutally shot dead outside Parliament buildings when protesters stormed parliament and torched sections of the Senate.

While Kenyans celebrated fallen shujaas, President William Ruto led the national celebrations in Kwale, where he remembered Kenyan freedom fighters who liberated the country from colonialism.

Ruto remembered Mekatilili wa Menza, Moraa Ng’iti among others for their role in helping Kenya gain independence.

The president also promised that he would ensure his Affordable Housing project would benefit all Kenyans.

He further assured employees of the now-defunct NHIF that they would not lose their jobs, instead, they would be absorbed into the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

Ruto further said his government will continue availing the subsidised fertiliser to farmers across the country at the cost of Ksh.2500 per bag…CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ARTICLES>>>
