Tribunal Stops Malala Expulsion As UDA Secretary General

The tribunal, composed of Desma Nungo, Stephen Musau, Muzna Jin, and Abdirahman Adan Abdikadir, directed that the respondent re-serve their responses to the applicant through email. The hearing will address Malala’s removal and the subsequent appointment of Omar as acting Secretary General.

Malala was removed from his position on August 2, 2024, following a decision by UDA’s National Executive Council (NEC), led by the party’s national chairperson, Cecile Mbarire. The NEC resolved to revoke Malala’s appointment after weeks of internal conflict within the ruling party.

In a statement, UDA said, “The appointment of Cleophas Malala as the interim Secretary General is hereby revoked. These changes are effective immediately.” Following his removal, Hassan Omar, UDA’s vice chairperson, was appointed as the acting Secretary General in line with Article 8.2 of the party’s constitution.
