The most important thing, among all the issues about the forthcoming election, is electing a credible leader, that can bring development to the country and revolve many of the current challenges the country is facing. A president that will cement and foster peace across the different regions, and religions in the country. The question, is, who can take the mantle from President Muhammadu Buhari? I need to also, mention that such a leader should be able to tackle the insecurity situation in the country.
Most of the focus, ahead of the 2023 general election, has been on the two major political parties in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, and the People Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP party, which held on to power for 16 years, before it was dethroned by the new APC party, will be looking to come back strong to unseat the current ruling party. Achieving that feat might be difficult for PDP because APC has many eligible politicians loved by Nigerians, that also have a pedigree.
One such politician is the former Governor of Edo State and former chairman of the APC party, Adams Oshiomhole from the South South region. The career of Adams Oshimhole’s career rose in such a way that one wouldn’t argue that he would emerge, president of Nigeria. Oshiomhole often spoke about his humble beginning, from the President of Nigeria Labour Congress from 1999-2007, where he did an impeccable job in the office and won the affection of Nigerians.
With his incredible record, he went on to contest for the office of the Governor of Edo State which he incredibly won, he was governor for two terms, from 2008 -2016. From there he went on to become the National Chairman of the APC party. Adams Oshiomhole promoted the current governor of the state, Governor Godwin Obaseki, along the line the two politicians fell out. They had a long dispute, which caused Godwin Obaseki to leave the APC party to PDP, and won another election for his second term in office.
Several issues came up and eventually, Oshiomhole was suspended by the Abuja Court of Appeal as the Chairman of the APC party. The clash between Obaseki and Oshiomhole caused Oshiomhole so much, as it was allegedly based on Oshiomole trying to override the state governor. In my opinion, if Oshiomole had continued the way he started, by his record of development in Edo State, he would have been people’s choice in the forthcoming general election.
