The app has gained prominence among Gen Zs with data from Sensor Tower indicating it was the third-most downloaded app on Apple’s App Store in Kenya between June 19 and June 24.

According toBusiness Daily, the app recorded over 100 million downloads on Google Playstore. One of the app’s users revealed it helped them get updates about the protests and the dos and don’ts of escaping the police dragnet.

“On Zello, “we were getting updates and also updating others on where the tear-gas canisters were being lobbed and which streets had been cordoned off,” Betty (not her real name), 27, told Rest of World.

Based in Austin, Texas, the United States, Zello is a computer software company known for its Zello app, which simulates push-to-talk (PTT) walkie-talkies over cellular networks.

The app, formerly known as Loudtalks, was created by Alexey Gavrilov and debuted on September 17, 2007, at the TechCrunch 40 Mobile and Communications Conference.

In June 2013, Zello garnered significant attention when Turkish protesters used the app to bypass government censorship.

Consequently, it became the most downloaded application in Turkey during the first week of June 2013. The youthful protesters are unrelenting in their push for a better life amid economic challenges worsened by high taxes and levies imposed by President William Ruto’s administration.

Fueled by growing discontent over economic challenges and perceived governmental shortcomings, the youth have made new demands on Ruto.
