The president proposed ODM’s outgoing national chairman, John Mbadi, to be the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury.
Addressing a gathering in Baringo on Friday, August 2, Ruto suggested that he wanted a shared responsibility in the direction the country takes, seemingly seeking to shake himself off the incessant blame for a supposedly failed economy.
According to him, Kenya would realise its economic potential if everyone came on board, irrespective of their political leanings.
“I decided to create a broad-based government so that we can everyone onboard and ask each other questions and find solutions to our debt. I don’t want to be called Zakayo alone. Those calling me names think the monies collected from Kenyans as tax go to my accounts. The money goes to the Kenyans’ account. I will continue to bring everyone so that we find answers to our problems,” Ruto said.
After firing his entire Cabinet on July 11 this year, Ruto expressed his new resolve of constituting a broad-based government that would see the opposition members joining the National Executive.
He went ahead to bring on board five officials of the ODM party which is in the opposition. Besides Mbadi, who was ODM party’s national chairman, Ruto nominated the party’s two deputy leaders, Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya, be the Cabinet secretaries for Mining and Co-operatives, respectively.
Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, who is ODM’s political affairs chief, was nominated into the Energy Ministry. Raila sent a statement in which he first conveyed the message of goodwill to the nominated quartet.
But he clarified that the nominations did not imply ODM joining the government or there being a power-sharing deal. He said that neither the ODM Party nor Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party had entered into any coalition agreement with the ruling UDA party.
