President William Ruto has defended the move by his administration to use public land for the construction of affordable housing units.

Speaking on Wednesday, Ruto said it is because the land often ends up in the hands of grabbers.

He said the use of the land for the affordable housing projects is a noble initiative to serve the people Kenyans.

“Many people have asked me why are you using public land to deliver housing. I mean what else was public land supposed to be used for? because in many cases, if we don’t use public land to deliver public housing, it ends up in the hands of a few other people by other means,” Ruto said.

The President spoke at the Linzi Sukuk Bell-ringing ceremony as it joined the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE).

Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to having more Kenyans become homeowners.

“I am committed to making sure we create more homeowners in Kenya,” he said.

Affordable Housing is one of President Ruto’s flagship projects.

The head of state said that the government plans to construct 1,000,000 houses across the country by 2027.

The President has been going around the country, launching affordable housing projects across counties.
