Speaking during the launch of the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association Strategic Plan in Nairobi on Thursday, Ruto disclosed that he stopped using DAP fertiliser on his farm five years ago.

He said for years, farmers have come to believe that DAP is the best fertiliser despite research by the Ministry of Agriculture showing otherwise.

“Many of you who come from farming areas you know DAP has been our fertiliser for the last 30 years, everybody believes Dap is the only fertiliser,” the President said.

“As a farmer myself I know DAP is the wrong fertiliser because it has made our soils acidic and I stopped using DAP almost five years ago because it is wrong,” Ruto said.

He said when making the decision on the type of fertiliser to avail to farmers for the subsidy programme, the choice was based on the available research.

He said the Ministry of Agriculture was skeptical at first, saying farmers had asked to be given DAP or else they would not buy it.

Ruto said he remained firm that the government will only buy NPK which is customised for our soils and crops.

“Farmers made noise that the government had brought them fertiliser they don’t know that they won’t buy nd have rejected, finally because it was subsidised the farmers bought the fertiliser,” he said.

“Six months into the story all the farmers were there taking selfies with maize because the maize is very nice,” he added.

Ruto said leadership is not always about taking popular decisions, but it is about taking the right decisions always.
