According to Abdullahi Adamu, when APC was trying to get a suitable candidate who would become the presidential candidate of the party, he nominated Ahmed Lawan and presented him to the party’s national working committee.
According to Abdullahi Adamu, he decided that Ahmed Lawan was the best candidate after a careful observation of the current political climate in Nigeria.
Abdullahi Adamu noted that his decision to prefer Ahmed Lawan as the best candidate was influenced by the decision of PDP to present Atiku Abubakar as their presidential candidate.
According to Abdullahi Adamu, he felt that APC should have a presidential candidate from the north because the emergence of Atiku Abubakar meant that APC could lose its grip on the north if the party chose a candidate from the south.
Abdullahi Adamu disclosed that after he told members of the party about the plans he had for Ahmed Lawan, some members of the party, especially governors, objected to his proposal. The governors disclosed that they want the presidential candidate of the party to come from the south.
Abdullahi Adamu disclosed that APC decided that the presidential candidate should be decided through the party’s convention. It was after the convention that Bola Tinubu emerged as the presidential candidate of APC.
