Participants from both groups were made to do a treadmill-based exercise session, after which the researchers performed eye exams to measure the production of tears and the stability of tear films in the eyes.

The results indicated that all the participants had increased tear production and quality after exercise, but those from the athlete group had greater benefits.

Adequate tear film not only prevents dryness in the eyes but also shields the eyes from irritants like dust and dirt that can lead to itching, burning or stinging.

The study’s findings suggest that better physical fitness and longer periods of exercise can be important ways to increase eye moisture. This study was published in the January 2022 issue of Experimental Eye Research.
