Far-right demonstrations in the wake of Monday’s Southport stabbing saw rioters clash with both police and counter-protesters in a number of major cities.

A Shoe Zone in Hull was set alight as shocking images show footwear scattered on the footpath outside.

Humberside Police Chief Superintendent Darren Wildbore said officers “faced eggs and bottles being thrown” as windows were smashed at a nearby hotel which has housed migrants.

Other footage in Manchester showed masked men chanting ‘England’ and ‘Oh, Tommy Tommy’ apparently in reference to far-right activist Tommy Robinson as others emerge with arms full of bottles of wine from the Sainsbury’s store in Picadilly Gardens.

The footage was filmed by Jake Land, a 29-year-old factory worker who was visiting Manchester from Buxton in the Peak District to do some clothes shopping when the chaos kicked off.

Looters raided the shop In Hull a Shoe Zone was looted and set on fire “I was shocked… I couldn’t believe the scenes today,” he said. “It was meant to be a peaceful protest but you could see the mobs in masks that ruined this and used it as an excuse to loot and cause harm. It was a drinking session to loot and to cause havoc while the [actual] cause hasn’t been recognised by these mobs.”

Protests spread across the UK on Saturday with similar protests seeing more than 90 people arrested in Liverpool, Nottingham, Hull and Bristol.
