The outdated T-80BV tanks produced in the Soviet Union that are now used by the Ukrainian air-assault brigades will be replaced by the newer Challenger 2 tanks. The T-80BV is an improved model of the T-80B Main Battle Tank (MBT), which the Soviet armed forces first deployed in 1985.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared on January 14, 2023, that the United Kingdom is prepared to send 14 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) to Ukraine in order to improve the Ukrainian armed forces’ ability to engage the Russian army in warfare.

Ukrainian army tank personnel landed in the UK at the end of January 2023 to start training with the British-made Challenger 2 Major Battle Tank (MBT). Around the end of March of this year, the first Challenger 2 tanks might be shipped to Ukraine.

Modern main battle tanks that were created and developed in the late 20th century include the T-80BV and Challenger 2. The T-80BV is a tank from the Soviet era that was put into service in 1985. It is equipped with a 125mm smoothbore gun that can fire a range of ammunition, including guided missiles, high-explosive rounds, and armor-piercing rounds.

The gas turbine engine that powers the T-80BV has a high power-to-weight ratio but uses less fuel than conventional diesel engines.

The British Challenger 2 tank first saw service in the late 1990s. It is equipped with a 120 mm L30A1 rifled tank gun. It is the first British tank gun to have a chrome-lined barrel, which extends the barrel’s lifespan and improves accuracy over time.

The Dorchester armor, which is part of the second generation of Chobham armor, is installed on the Challenger 2. It significantly improves defense against Kinetic Energy (KE) and Shaped Charge (Chemical Energy – CE) assaults.

Both the T-80BV and the Challenger 2 are highly armored tanks that provide protection. The T-80BV is protected against anti-tank missiles and rockets by explosive reactive armor and composite armor.

The Challenger 2 offers stronger defense against contemporary weaponry with to its composite armor, Chobham armor, and explosive reactive armor.

Both tanks are extremely strong and capable overall. Nonetheless, because of its superior fire control system and more sophisticated sensors, the Challenger 2 is typically thought to have a technological advantage over the T-80BV.

The Challenger 2’s use of NATO-compatible communications and electronics also makes it more appropriate for employment in armies with a Western aesthetic.
