Confusion has rocked President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) following the ouster of former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala as its Secretary-General, as it emerged that the Political Parties Tribunal had barred the party from conducting a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting today (Friday, August 2). The chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) Desma Nungo gave the order on Thursday.
However, on Friday morning, UDA announced the revocation of Malala’s appointment as interim secretary-general.
The party’s NEC said that, upon consultation, the position will be taken up by vice chairperson Hassan Omar on an Interim basis.
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who is the party’s chairperson, chaired the NEC meeting.
“Upon wide and consultative deliberations, and in compliance and in accordance with its mandate under Article 8.2 of the party’s constitution, the National Executive Committee has determined to designate the vice-chairperson, Hon. Hassan Omar Hassan to act as the secretary-general on an interim basis. The appointment of Hon Cleophas Malala as the interim secretary-general is hereby revoked,” the party said.
On Wednesday, UDA announced it would hold an emergency NEC meeting on Friday.
This decision came after some of Malala’s supporters stormed the party offices, a day after a group of founding members announced his “ouster” and named Joe Khalende as the new secretary-general.
Mbarire said the planned meeting would thoroughly address the situation and determine the appropriate actions in response to the day’s events.
“We are not going to allow this to continue. We will take necessary action on Friday after the NEC meeting,” she said.
Mbarire also assured the members that the party remains firm despite the incident, as she condemned the “political goons” whom she said were mobilised to cause mayhem in the party....CONTINUE READING>>
