During a press briefing on Wednesday, August 14, after a National Executive Committee meeting, UASU secretary-general Constantine Wesonga issued a strike notice, citing delay and non-payment of their full salaries. “What we are saying, no learning in public universities as from September.

Enough is enough. I’ll give a seven-day strike notice beginning today. I only need to give a notice. So just start counting from today. If they don’t solve this issue there will be no learning. Why should we keep complaining all the time? But all in all, no learning in September, and we are tired,” Wesonga stated.

He said the continuous salary delays had subjected the academic staff in public universities to untold suffering and embarrassment. The UASU boss stated that the new model had failed, challenging those supporting it to ensure their salaries were paid. “I am not seeing us having university education in this country going forward.

From September this year I want to tell you there will be no university education in this country if the government doesn’t want to be serious. They came up with a funding model that we don’t know where it emanated from. Which Kenyan proposed to the presidential working committee this funding model?

They came up with an archaic funding model that everybody doesn’t understand. The new funding model is not working and we don’t know where it came from. If you are saying it is working then pay our members and pay them on time,” added Wesonga.

Wesonga criticised university vice-chancellors, accusing them of being the weak link in their struggle. HELB breaks down fees for each course Earlier, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) shared how every university programme would be funded under the new model.

This followed the application deadline extension to August 15, 2024, after the government recalled all admission letters to determine how much parents would be required to pay.
