The race for the Ekiti State Government Secretariat is getting more interesting by the day. Mr. Kayode Fayemi himself was a member of the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari. He resigned when the preparation for 2018 gubernatorial election was in progress. Likewise, two of his appointees want to replace him at the secretariat.
The first one is Mr. Abiodun Oyebanji. The top politician used to be the Secretary to the Ekiti State Government until he tendered his letter to leave the cabinet and proceed to run his own campaign. He is one of the most powerful contenders for the ticket.
At the time he was leaving the cabinet to actualise his ambition, he argued that the state governor, his principal, Kayode Fayemi, didn’t have any anointed candidate yet. But one thing that should be cleared is that Oyebanji must have informed Fayemi about his ambition before turning in his resignation letter.
Another appointee of Fayemi has dropped his own letter which was dated December 14, 2021. Mr. Bamidele Faparusi used to be the commissioner for Infrastructure and Public utilities. Most definitely, he used to campaign that power should shift to the Ekiti South Senatorial District.
Mr. Faparusi isn’t a green horn in Ekiti and national politics. He once represented the good people of Ekiti East, Gbonyin and Emure Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives for four years. Now, he wants to aspire to lead the people of Ekiti State. He will rely on his experience in executive and legislative to govern the state.
However, the competition may be beyond the cabinet of Kayode Fayemi. Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele is now in the race as well. The leader of the southern senators caucus has officially joined the race to clinch the ticket of his political party. And he will be challenging the two former appointees of Fayemi.
