Nearly half of agricultural workers in the U.S. are undocumented immigrants, and Trump’s controversial mass deportation plan creates major obstacles for America’s farmers.

Some 45 percent of all agricultural workers in the U.S. today, 950,000 of an estimated 2.2 million farmworkers, are “unauthorized” migrants working illegally on American farms and ranches.

All migrants unlawfully in the U.S. would be deported under Trump’s new flagship policy rolled out for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

Republican lawmakers argue mass deportation plans would create jobs for Americans, however, one expert toldNewsweekthe policy would create a “huge labor shortage.”

Hector Quiroga, an immigration attorney, toldNewsweek: “If implemented, these mandates would create a huge labor shortage in the U.S. and it would make us less competitive in the global marketplace.

“Employers in certain jobs are already having a hard time filling positions due to the lack of availability of certain employment visas.”

Wisconsin and California could be significantly impacted by the dairy industry alone. According to the National Milk Producers Federation, immigrant labor accounts for 51 percent of all dairy labor, and dairies that employ immigrant labor produce 79 percent of the U.S. milk supply.

Trump’s deportation policy could sway voters toward Vice President Kamala Harris as 70 percent of the labor on Wisconsin’s dairy farms is carried out by more than 10,000 undocumented migrant workers, according to a survey carried out by the University of Wisconsin.

Harris would beat Trump in Wisconsin by two points, 49 percent to 47 percent, according to a poll conducted by Bloomberg/Morning. However, in one poll carried out by Fox News, Trump held a narrow lead over the incumbent vice president by one point.

According to the National Milk Producers Federation, “Immigrant labor accounts for 51 percent of all dairy labor, and dairies that employ immigrant labor produce 79 percent of the U.S. milk supply.” This suggests that forced removals could leave a sizeable hole in the U.S. workforce if Trump’s plans are enacted.

California is the largest food-producing state in the U.S. and relies on an immigration workforce. California has substantial labor needs due to fruit and vegetable growing sectors. Approximately 75% of farm workers in the state are undocumented, according to the Center for Farmworker Families.

During Trump’s keynote speech at the RNC convention, he issued a stark warning to illegal migrants. “The Republican platform promises to launch the biggest deportation operation in the history of our country,” Trump said.

“Today our cities are flooded with illegal aliens. Americans are being squeezed out of the labor force, and their jobs are taken. By the way, you know who’s taking the jobs—the jobs that are created? One hundred and seven percent of those jobs are taken by illegal aliens...CONTINUE READING>>
