The program, which is designed to provide students with an opportunity to earn income while gaining work experience, has sparked outrage due to the perceived inadequacy of the pay.

Under the work-study program, students are attached to various departments within the university, performing tasks as assigned by their supervisors.

The initiative is particularly targeted at vulnerable students to help them meet their financial needs while studying.

However, the Ksh50 hourly wage—equating to Ksh400 for an eight-hour workday—has been widely condemned as insufficient, especially in the context of rising living costs.

Critics have taken to social media to voice their concerns, with one user noting that construction laborers earn more than the proposed rate.

Another termed the pay as “an insult to the students,” accusing the university of exploiting its learners.

UoN has defended the program, noting that it prioritizes students who are registered as needy or vulnerable and emphasizes that applicants must be in good academic standing.
