Some Kenyans have accused the president of relaunching initiatives that were originally started during the Jubilee administration under former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Mohamed, however, clarifies that Ruto is not relaunching these projects but rather reviving ones that had stalled.
The spokesperson emphasizes that it is the president’s duty to ensure the completion of all viable projects, including those that were halted before his term began. This commitment, Mohamed states, aligns with the pledges made in the Kenya Kwanza manifesto which formed the basis of Ruto’s election campaign.
He further explains that during the president’s development tours across the country, Ruto will continue to implement the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which involves launching new projects, inspecting ongoing ones, and revitalizing stalled initiatives where necessary.
President Ruto’s recent developmental tours in the Coast, Mt Kenya, and Western regions have involved the launch of several projects. However, these launches have sparked debate with some arguing that many were initially started by the Jubilee administration, in which Ruto served as Deputy President.
A notable example is the Kanyuambora Irrigation Project in Embu County which Ruto launched on August 7. This project became a topic of discussion on social media, with claims that it had been previously launched by Kenyatta in 2021.
The National Irrigation Authority provided clarification on the Kanyuambora project, explaining that it had stalled in February 2022 due to the contractor’s non-performance. Upon taking office, the Kenya Kwanza government terminated the existing contract and re-procured the project under the new administration, in accordance with legal provisions.
As Ruto prepares to commence his development tour of Western Kenya, the focus remains on implementing the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
This strategy aims to foster economic growth from the grassroots level thus supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, improving infrastructure, and enhancing access to essential services such as healthcare and education.
