In 1979, Oprong’s political career faced a setback when he lost his seat to the younger Achiya Echakara. However, his political fortunes reversed in 1992 when he was elected MP for Amagoro constituency, marking a notable comeback.

Oprong’s life took a dramatic turn in 1994 when he survived an assassination attempt. An unknown assailant shot him, leaving a bullet lodged in his head. This injury led to a prolonged period of suffering, with Oprong enduring health complications and frequent hospitalizations over the next 25 years. During this challenging time, he received support from leading figures in Kenyan politics, including ODM leader Raila Odinga and KANU’s Gideon Moi, who helped cover his medical expenses.

Despite his enduring health issues, Oduya Oprong continued to be a respected figure in Kenyan politics. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 83, after a long period of suffering.
