In a statement shared last night, an a hour to midnight, the Office of the Government Spokesperson headed by Isaac Mwaura noted that the assurance was reached after a meeting between the Ministry of Education and the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESHA). “With regard to the looming teachers strike occasioned by labour dispute between teachers’ unions and the TSC (Teachers Service Commission), KESSHA in collaboration with the ministry of education and the TSC would wish to assure all the parents and the learners countrywide that the learner’s welfare and well-being would be safeguarded while in the institutions of learning,” read the notice in part.

“Subsequently, parents are advised to prepare learners for third term school reopening starting 26 August 2024.” The notice came in the backdrop of confusion on scheduled teachers strike scheduled to kick off on Monday over what teachers termed as a result of TSC’s failure to honour the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Yesterday, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), which is headed by Secretary General Collins Oyuu, called off the strike that was scheduled to kick off today. Oyuu asked the tutors to report to schools for the third term after the union’s extensive deliberations.

“The NEC has, therefore, today August 25, 2024, agreed to withdraw the strike action notice which was elapsing midnight August 25, 2024, since we have commenced addressing the remaining matters administratively,” Oyuu stated.

“In light of the latest developments, we direct our teachers to resume duty effective Monday, August 26, 2024.” Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), however, insisted that the strike was still on.
