During the visit, Kuria revealed that he will follow up with the relevant agencies to ensure that the family receives compensation for the incident.

‘’I assured the grieving family that I will personally ensure they receive compensation within six months,’’ Kuria urged. Kuria further stated that the recent attack was a new trend that was disturbing, maintaining that there was no previous record of human animal conflicts in the area.

This was despite the number of hyena attacks that have been reported around the area in the recent past. According to the former CS, the animals around the area used to coexist peacefully with the residents.

‘’This incident represents a new and disturbing trend as there has been no previous record of human-animal conflict in the area. Historically, hyenas and humans in this area coexisted peacefully,’’ Kuria revealed.

The senior advisor requested the National EnvironmentManagement Authority(NEMA) to close down all illegal mining sites and quarries in order to wade off the hiding spaces for the animals to avoid human conflicts.

Kuria also called upon the county of Kiambu to revoke licenses and close down abandoned quarries to stop the menace. ‘’It’s also crucial that the Kiambu County Government take decisive action to decommission abandoned quarries, as they are responsible for quarry licensing,’’ he added.

Kuria called upon the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) to relocate the hyenas to a remote area to help keep them away from attacking the residents.

During the visit Kuria was accompanied by the Senior Director of the Southern Conservation Area, who is leading the KWS rangers in capturing and relocating the hyenas in the area.

Kuria revealed that eight people had died from the attacks with three suffering injuries since 2017. ‘’According to local reports, there have been eight fatalities and three injuries attributed to hyena attacks since 2017,’’ Kuria noted….CLICK HERE FOR MORE ARTICLE>>>
